VISUAL RHETORIC AND DESIGN

Designing Power Point (PP) lectures for professors has been part of my job in the anthropology department for over a year now. Using PP in lieu of traditional photo-slides has become the new standard (i.e. convention) for lectures in anthropology. Having seen many different PP design strategies, Tufte's article resonated with the part of me that wants to throw tomatoes when I see a bad PP presentation. There is indeed a huge problem with the way in which PP is used. In my opinion though, Tufte's point seemed to be directed more at the presenters rather than PP.

The success or failure of a PP lecture begins with the person writing it. The product of any work is going to depend on the creators knowledge of the medium in which they are working. The creation of a painting depends on the painters knowledge of the tools involved with the craft. The same is true whether its building a rocking chair, using Photoshop, or writing a novel. Knowing how to manipulate the tools to get the results you want is the skill of the creator.

PP doesn't dictate what the content of a slide will be, and nor does it COMPLETELY determine what the slide will look like. The program leaves plenty of room for novelty outside of convention. PP does suggest certain strategies for presenting information, i.e. color and font schemes, but the author has the ultimate decision in whether or not to use it. Part of the problem seems to be that people don't know how to use PP to its fullest extent, and therefore they rely on the preset designs. And when people rely on these designs to take the place of dialogue, we have Tufte's designer-drug effect of induced stupidity, boredom among audience, wasted time, and degradated quality and credibility of communication.

With that said, I don't see any reason a designer can't marry Tufte's aesthetics with PP. In the example he used illustrating good vs. bad graphs, there is nothing keeping the PP designer from using the "Good" style in a PP slide. If you don't like the way PP makes graphs, then import a graph you do like from another program. PP works well with a variety of different softwares, e.g. Excel, Photoshop, other imaging softwares. Don't blame the tool for the users ignorance.
